September BCW Meeting

Our next meeting is Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 7 to 9PM. (Note: This is the 3rd Thursday).

We meet at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Brandon, 3315 Bryan Road, Family Center-Room 305.

Gil Gonzalez will speak about social media, blogging & building your online presence. A critique session will follow his talk.

In preparation for our upcoming Brandon Christian Writers e-book, please write the story of how you came into relationship with Christ (in 400 words or less).

Other possible prompts:

1) Share about an unspeakable joy experience.

2) Describe a “divine appointment” experience when God arranged for your path to cross another’s and you were connected for a purpose.

3) A summer to remember

FIWR Update

The Florida Inspirational Writers Retreat is just around the corner (September 28). If you’ve yet to register, we’d like to remind you the Early Bird Registration deadline is August 31.

In addition, we are excited to share that Cheri Cowell, FIWR keynote speaker, offers e-book conversion services to help fellow authors take advantage of this growing market. Since opening two years ago, EA Books have added short run print-on-demand as well as audiobook services.

September Writing Contests

WritersMarket.com lists hundreds of contests for writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, writing for children, and more. Here are three with September deadlines:

  • Christian Book Awards is offered annually for the best contribution to evangelical Christian book publishing. Winners are recognized by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Writers should submit between September 2-30.
  • Juniper Prize for Poetry is an annual award for a previously unpublished manuscript of poetry-in odd years such as this year, they are looking for first-time authors. Prize is $1,500, plus publication. Deadline: September 30.
  • Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Awards is offered annually for the best previously unpublished short genre fiction. Categories included science fiction, horror, thriller, romance, crime, and young adult. Grand prize is $2,500 and a trip to the Writer’s Digest Conference in New York City; each category also has a $500 first place prize. Early bird deadline: September 16.
